Adding and Removing Time in a Video

Created by Teira Ellis, Modified on Wed, 19 Jun, 2024 at 10:05 AM by Teira Ellis

Mark the start and end time of the portion of the video you wish to keep. Everything before the start time and everything after the end time will be removed.  When you click SAVE in the START TIME END TIME window, you will see a visual indicator on the timeline slider. The timing marked in red will be removed. If happy, close this window, then click SAVE on the authoring toolbar.   The video will now close as it needs to process this work. It may take a few minutes depending on the length of the video.

If you are not happy with your work, simply leave the editor before clicking SAVE on the authoring toolbar to abandon your changes.  If you do proceed with clicking SAVE, the change is permanent.

A best practice is to create a duplicate of a video to keep as a backup while you perform this work. To create a duplicate, in the editor view, click SETTINGS on the authoring toolbar, then click VIDEO SETTINGS.  In the window that opens, click the METADATA tab, then edit the title and click SAVE AS.  You will now be placed in edit mode of the new copy of the video.  Note that this only copies the video itself and any elements in the video are now reused. If editing elements, you should use the same approach of SAVE AS instead of SAVE if you wish to keep the original video and it’s elements in its original form.

An alternative to Adding and Removing time is to use the START TIME AND END TIME feature within SETTINGS, then VIDEO SETTINGS and by clicking MORE in the window that opens.  Here you can add the timing to determine what section of video is available to users when shared.  This is a great alternative as it does not permanently edit the video itself.  This feature is best used when setting the SEEK CONTROLS to Always as the viewers will never be able to access the hidden timing.
